Police confirm kidnap of Edo monarch’s wife

The Edo State Police Command on Wednesday confirmed the kidnap of the wife of the Onojie of Ewatto kingdom in Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State, Mrs. Florence Ikhumhen, with one of her daughters by unknown gunmen.

The Command spokesman, Chidi Nwabuzor, said he has been informed of the incident by the DPO, Ikpoba Hill Division.

“We have been informed of it by the DPO of Ikpoba Hill Division. Yes she was kidnapped alongside her daughter,” he said.

The incident he also said took place on Sunday, adding that investigation was ongoing.

Queen Florence Ikhumhen who has just retired as the principal of Itohan Grammar School, Benin City was kidnapped on Sunday night along with her daughter at her residence around the Jemilla area of Benin by gunmen who shot indiscriminately into the air before taking them away.

An eyewitness said the gunmen armed with AK 47 rifles came with a speed boat through the Ikpoba River and after the abduction of the retired principal and her daughter also left through the same route.

The incident was reported to the Ikpoba Hill police station immediately.

It was also learnt that the kidnappers have been making contacts with the palace and their close family members but the amount demanded has not been disclosed.
